Newcastle United got their first three points in seven games thanks to a 2-0 victory over a feeble Bolton side on Boxing Day.
The defeat leaves Owen Coyle’s side just one point away from returning to the bottom of the table, while Newcastle stays seventh.
A scrappy half saw little goal action from either side, with a couple of almost identical free kicks the only highlights of a boorish 45 minutes. Ryan Taylor and Mark Davies fired set pieces for their respective outfits, with the opposing ‘keepers making stunning saves to stop the efforts.


The game awakened in the last 20 minutes of the tie, with Hatem Ben Arfa finally opening the scoring after coming off the bench, then, just two minutes later, Bolton’s fate was sealed as Demba Ba poked in a second.

The opening minutes of the game saw both sides battle it out for possession, but the first solid chance came from the visitors, with Jussi Jaaskelainen keeping out a curing free kick from Ryan Taylor. The right foot of the fullback placed the ball delightfully to the Finnish ‘keeper’s bottom corner, with the veteran timing his dive to perfection to preserve the goalless score line.
It was Tim Krul’s turn to keep out an accurate free kick next just a few minutes before the break. Mark Davies this time at the other end in a similar position to that of Taylor’s blasted the ball at the Dutchman, with the Newcastle man getting down well to push the effort away.
A pretty futile first half ended for both sides at the Reebok. Bolton looked to pile on some last minute pressure with a couple of corners, but Newcastle’s defense stayed dogged enough to see it. The free kicks were the only real talking point for the punters at the break, with both ‘keepers making the difference so far, while the strikers had failed to offer anything to split the difference between the sides.
The second period of the game looked to mirror the first, with the exception of Newcastle seemingly getting closer to getting an opener.
Bolton looked to have no attacking spirit at all and was punished on 69 minutes as a great run from Taylor allowed the fullback to whip the ball in for substitute Ben Arfa  to blast past Jaaskelainen, giving the ‘keeper no chance of getting to his low powerful effort.
Just two minutes later and the Magpies had doubled their lead. A good run on the other side from Gabriel Obertan saw the Frenchman cross the ball in front of goal and onto the toe of Ba, who with little pressure, popped the ball into the top corner from short distance.
The hosts remained a desperate outfit looking for the slightest sniff on goal, but a lack of positive movement and uninspiring substitutions saw the Trotters succumb to what they have tasted so many times during this campaign and left the visiting fans shouting at a solemn Owen Coyle “you’re getting sacked in the morning!”

Substitute Jack Colback opened the scoring in the 26th minute having come on for the injured Titus Bramble early on, and the hosts led going into half time.

But Everton were awarded a soft penalty as Leon Osman appeared to kick the ground before falling over, with Leighton Baines converting the chance from the spot.

Martin O’Neill kept his faith in Nicklas Bendtner as a lone striker, with support being offered by Stephane Sessegnon. Titus Bramble partnered Wes Brown in the center of defense with John O’Shea lining up at left-back.
David Moyes opted for a similar 4-4-1-1 formation with Tim Cahill offering support behind Louis Saha. Leon Osman lined up on the right of midfield with Royston Drenthe wide on the left and a central pairing of Phil Neville and John Heitinga.



The first save from either goalkeeper came for Keiran Westwood in the seventh minute after a long clearance from Phil Jagielka. Brown misjudged the bounce and allowed Cahill to get onto the end of it, but his shot from an acute angle was stopped by the Sunderland ‘keeper.
Everton was on top in the opening 15 minutes, with Leighton Baines attacking well down the left. He forced Bramble into a difficult clearance before whipping in a corner that Cahill headed wide.
And Saha had the best chance of the opening stages as he backed off his at the back post before completely miscuing his header from another Baines corner.
Sunderland’s first real opportunity to get ta the Everton defense came in the 19^th minute as Bendtner was released with a fine volleyed pass from Sessegnon.
The Danish striker was one-one-one with Tony Hibbert but the defender did well not to commit himself and forced the striker to stall on the ball and eventually the chance was gone.
Moments later, O’Neill was forced into his first substitution of the afternoon as Titus Bramble left the field through injury and was replaced by Jack Colback who moved into midfield. John O’Shea moved into the center of defense with Kieran Richardson at left back.
And it was the substitute Colback who opened the scoring in the 26^th minute, the earliest by a substitute since Dwight Yorke scored in the 23^rd minute in October 2004. A good move from Sessegnon, running across the defense before feeding Colback, who’s shot was deflected by Sylvain over the top of Tim Howard and into the Everton net.

Manchester City was unable to score in a Premier League game for the first time this season as West Bromwich Albion managed to hold the leaders to a 0-0 draw on Boxing Day.

With Manchester United cruising to a five-goal victory over Wigan, the two Manchester clubs are now even at the top of the Premier League table.

The first half saw David Silva miss one that could very well have been the winner, while Shane Long managed to miss a header in the second period that could have seen his side register a famous victory.

The hosts had lost their last five games on Boxing Day, but that did not stop them from having a go early on, as Long and Peter Odemwingie fell back slightly and allowed Chris Brunt to take a shot from 25-yards out that went just wide of Joe Hart's far post.

But the pattern of the game was evident within the first 10 minutes, as it was Carlos Mancini's men who were on the attack while the Baggies defended deep. In one such instance, a cross from Gael Clichy found James Milner unmarked, but the midfielder headed wide of the target.

The first genuine effort on goal came after 17 minutes, when Paul Scharner's right-footed shot produced a save from Joe Hart. From the resulting corner, a series of blocked shots followed by another corner. But the score line eventually remained goalless as the set play did not trouble the defense.

City had a great opportunity to break the deadlock when Sergio Aguero cut in from the left and sent the ball to David Silva, who was in the area. But the Spain international sent the ball over the bar, perhaps feeling that that should have been buried.

A little past the 30-minute mark, Mario Balotelli managed to put the ball in the back of the net after the ball fell to him following a shot from Silva. But the linesman adjudged the Italian to have been in an offside position as the equilibrium of the game remained unchanged.

Ten minutes into the second period, Balotelli initially appeared to be sending in a cross, but had decided to go for glory instead. His curling shot caught goalkeeper Ben Foster off his line and almost caused a sensational goal, but the crossbar saved West Brom from trailing.

At the other end, an overhit cross saw Vincent Kompany taking no chances, heading the ball away to safety. But an error from Toure meant eventually saw Thomas sending in a superb cross that Long should have converted. But the forward's header somhow managed to miss the target, despite the former Reading man having more than enough space at the back post.

A little past the hour mark, Milner headed a cross into the box for Aguero to do the damage, but a vital tackle from Gareth McAuley saved the day with a superb challenge for the hosts as Nicky Shorey might have been left feeling he should have been quicker, which would have avoided putting his team in a desperate position in defense.

With only a little over 15 minutes left, the game was getting a little stretched as the Baggies began to slowly move a little forward and grope for a goal. Odemwingie set up Scharner for a shot from 20 yards, with the latter sending a low driven shot towards goal. The effort had Hart beaten, but unfortunately for the home side it did not beat the post.

Mulumbu pulled up with a problem with about 10 minutes to go. It may not have been a big surprise for Hodgson, considering that the midfielder had been a doubt for this encounter due to a hamstring issue. Graham Dorrans came on to replace the former Paris Saint-Germain man. Meanwhile, Mancini had brought on Johnson with Aguero going off, while Dzeko came on for Milner.
